Thousands take to the streets to demand:
U.S. out of Afghanistan and Iraq now!

On Saturday, thousands of people converged at the White House for the March 20 March on Washington—the largest anti-war demonstration since the announcement of the escalation of the Afghanistan war. By the time the march started at 2 p.m., the crowd had swelled up to 10,000 protesters.
Dozens of buses came from at least 44 cities in 19 states. Demonstrators rallied and marched shoulder to shoulder to demand “U.S. Out of Iraq and Afghanistan Now,” “Free Palestine,” “Reparations for Haiti” and “No sanctions against Iran” as well as “Money for jobs, education and health care!”
Speakers at the Washington rally represented a broad cross section of the anti-war movement, including veterans and military families, labor, youth and students, immigrant right groups, and the Muslim and Arab American community.
Following the rally, a militant march led by veterans, active-duty service members and military families made its way through the streets of D.C. carrying coffins draped in Afghan, Iraqi, Pakistani, Somali, Yemeni, Haitian and U.S. flags, among those of other countries, as a symbol of the human cost of war and occupation. Coffins were dropped off along the way at Halliburton, the Washington Post, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and other institutions connected to the war profiteering, propaganda, and human suffering. The final coffin drop-off was at the White House—the decision-making center of U.S. imperialism.
Click here to see a slideshow of the March 20 March on Washington.
The demonstration received substantial media coverage. It was featured in a major story on page A3 on the Sunday Washington Post (click here to read it). An Associated Press article on the March on Washington was picked up by a large number of newspapers and media outlets in the United States and abroad.
Joint demonstrations in San Francisco and Los Angeles drew 5,000 and 3,000 people respectively.
In San Francisco, the demonstration included the participation of UNITE HERE Local 2 hotel workers, who are presently fighting for a contract; students, teachers and parents who have been organizing against education budget cutbacks; and community members and activists who have been engaged in a struggle to stop fare hikes and service cuts.
In Los Angeles, 3,000 people marched through the streets of Hollywood carrying not only coffins but also large tombstones that read “R.I.P. Health care / Jobs / Public Education / Housing,” to draw attention to the economic war being waged against working-class people at home in order to fund the wars abroad. Essential social services are being slashed to pay for the largest defense budget in history.
The March 20 demonstrations mark a new phase for the anti-war movement. A new layer of activists joined these actions in large numbers, including numerous youth and students from multinational, working-class communities. A sharp connection was drawn between the wars abroad and the war against working people at home. Though smaller than the demonstrations of 2007, this mobilization was larger than the demonstration last year—the first major anti-war action under the Obama administration. The real-life experience of the past year has shown that what we need is not a change in the presidency, but a change in the system that thrives on war, militarism and profits.
These demonstrations were a success thanks to the committed work of thousands of organizers and volunteers around the country. They raised funds, spread the word through posters and flyers, organized buses and other transportation, and carried out all the work that was needed on the day of the demonstration. We took to the streets in force even as the government tried to silence us with tens of thousands of dollars in illegal fines for postering in Washington, D.C., and felony charges against activists for postering in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
We want to especially thank all those who made generous donations for this mobilization. Without those contributions, we could not have carried out this work.
March 20 was an important step forward for the anti-war movement. We must continue to build on this momentum in the months ahead. Your donation will help us recover much-needed funds that helped pay for this weekend's successful demonstration, as well as prepare for the actions to come.

"Master of War" Card Delivery Schedule
-------------------------------------------------------------

We have begun delivering our "Master of War" cards to Northeast Ohio US
Congressional Representatives and both US Senators. A delivery was made to Rep.
Steve LaTourette today. The schedule for other deliveries is below. Please join
us! A sample card is at:
Front: http://www.afsc.net/PDFFiles/MasterofWarCardFrontVoinovich.pdf
Back: http://www.afsc.net/PDFFiles/MasterofWarCardBackVoinovich.pdf

OUR MESSAGE TO OUR FEDERAL ELECTED OFFICIALS WHEN WE DELIVER THE CARDS:
Cut up your "Master of War" card and become a Servant for Peace and Justice!
Use the savings to cut the deficit (a majority of it is due to the cost,
including interest, of past wars) and to meet domestic needs!

The cards are meant to dramatize how many US tax dollars are spent on the
military in general and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and occupations in
particular. The oversized credit cards are more, however, than clever props.
They represents cold, hard reality. The delivery of the cards to Congress, which
controls our nation's purse strings, is timely since:

- Congress will soon be voting on yet another round of "supplemental" funding
for the ongoing and unending wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan - this
time for $33 billion, and
- Congress must agree by early April to a "budget resolution" -- establishing a
total for next year's military spending. The President has proposed over $700
billion in the fiscal year beginning October 1. Once agreed, the amount is
locked in. So now is the time to hold our Senators and Representatives
accountable to their constituents (that's US!).

Join us in delivering the personalized cards! We are letting the media know of
our encouragement of federal fiscal responsibility -- including local papers in
the communities where the Representatives have their district offices!

If you can join us, please let the listed contact person know. We'd like to have
a good sized group at each location.

To be announced

At The Federal Building on December 2nd, 2009  Northeast Ohio Spoke Truth to Power and said….

Stop the Escalation!!!

President Obama announced on Tuesday 12/1/09 that he wants to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan - which will widen the war and deepen the occupation. But for that to happen Congress still must agree.  And we can still Stop The Escalation by speaking out.

So, we gathered in front of the Federal Building to announce our opposition to Obama's plan to deploy more troops, denounce 18 more months (at least) of war and occupation, and pronounce our commitment to pressuring our Senators and Congressperson to:

* Support the troops by not sending more to Afghanistan!

* End the Afghanistan War and Occupation NOW!

* Commit Money for Jobs, Human Needs and the Environment in Cleveland NOW!

* And Employ Diplomacy and Development, Not Death and Destruction!

If Obama isn’t paying attention somebody is……. TV5 sent a reporter and camera crew to hear what we had to say.

And just as we were dispersing, and as traffic dwindled,

a group of Oberlin Students joined us and kept the message alive.

See photos of the Federal Building Action here

But is that all we can do????

No, not at all…. Now we need to let Congress know that WE

don’t want THEM to let Obama have the money to send more troops!!!!

Call the Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121,

Ask for your Representative’s Office & tell their staff to Stop the Escalation.

Also check http://www.house.gov/ to see if you can send email to your Representative.

Then move on to the Senate at http://www.senate.gov/

Keep Scrolling to see more Past NOAC Actions

(excuse the gaps & lack of graphics .... repairs are in progress)

And before that we were on the street at Winterfest

Saturday Nov 28th with our message,

(to see pictures of the Vigil click here)

But

If Obama still decides to send more troops to Afghanistan

when he announces his plans on Tuesday…..

Join us at the Federal Building on

Wednesday December 2nd from 4:30-6:30pm

to tell Cleveland that

We don’t want more troops,

We want Peace in Afghanistan!

Keep calling the White House Until then too!!

(scroll down for details)

There’s one more chance to see Rethink Afghanistan,

at a group screening here in Northeast Ohio!!

December 4th 2009 at 7pm,

at Westshore Unitarian Universalist Society,

20401 Hilliard Rd, Rocky River, OH 44116

More information at:  http://westshorefilmseries.wetpaint.com

or call Bob Bemer at 440-333-2255

(scroll down for film details or go to http://rethinkafghanistan.com/ )

But, If you’ve already seen the film and want to do something about it

or if you’re simply outraged by the expected “troop surge”….

There are two immediate opportunities to make your voice heard:

(1)          Join the Vigil for Peace at the Soldiers & Sailors Monument

Nov. 28th 5:30-6:30.

Saturday is Winterfest on Public Square.

The tree lighting ceremony begins at 6:00 pm.

And there needs to be a peace presence…, and WE can do it.

Our message to President Obama is:

                                  * Support the troops, don't send more to Afghanistan!

                                  * End the Afghanistan War and Occupation NOW!

                                  * Money for Jobs, Human Needs & the Environment NOW!

Bring a candle or flashlight.

Bring a sign.

Bring a friend.

(2)   Call the White House to make your opinion known..

Obama's decision on troop escalation is expected soon.

(Possibly as early as Tuesday, but there’s still time to call on Monday 9a-5p)

We must keep up the pressure for peace

and against any troop escalation in Afghanistan.

Call the White House Comment Line - 202-456-1111.

(Or to save the toll charge, call the National Peace Action Message Line – 888-310-8637

after a short message you  will be connected to the White House)

Then help NOAC keep the momentum going and…

C-20 (or more) to the G-20!!

Why we went to Pittsburgh to protest the G-20 meeting.

What is the G-20?

It's a Summit of the finance ministers and central bank leaders of 19 countries
and financial representatives from the European Union, as well as
representatives from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The
group is strongly dominated by representatives of the world's major powers,
gathering one to two times per year to discuss the world economy and make joint
decisions affecting finance and trade.

Assembled behind closed doors, these meetings espouse the same pro-corporate
banking policies that have led to millions being laid off, foreclosed, evicted
and plunged into hunger both in the United States and around the world. Their
decision to meet on September 24-25 in Pittsburgh -a city deeply affected by
economic crises of years past-shows the callousness of these world leaders in
the face of massive human suffering.

NOAC Statement of Purpose

Northeast Ohio Anti-War Coalition [NOAC]

Current revisions finalized 9/13/07

The Northeast Ohio Anti-War Coalition (NOAC) is a network of groups and individuals focused on stopping pre-emptive, unjust, illegal, and/or unconstitutional wars and occupations as instruments of US foreign or economic policy. It seeks to bring together a broad number of organizations and individuals for the purpose of organizing mass, visible events of a peaceful character. By doing so, NOAC seeks to:

  1. Educate the public regarding the U.S. government's attempt to utilize such pre-emptive, unjust, illegal and/or unconstitutional wars and occupations to advance its goal of building an empire which controls other nations and their resources all across the globe.
